Overview
Emily Grason, Marine Ecologist, is the lead of WSG Crab Team. She oversees a comprehensive program focused on early detection, monitoring and control of the European green crab, considered one of the world’s most damaging invasive species. Her work starts in the mud and carries through to the conference room, working with volunteers and natural resource managers to document sightings of green crab, track the species’ impacts and translate information into action.
Emily helped launch Crab Team as a community science model for early detection of green crab while still a graduate student at UW in 2014. Since that time, she has helped grow the Crab Team to meet additional management needs across Washington shorelines. Currently, within Crab Team’s program areas, Emily collaborates on research efforts aimed at advancing management of green crab, and works with tribes and agencies to build technical capacity to trap and control populations across Washington shorelines.
Emily holds a master’s degree in Biology from Western Washington University and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Washington. She currently serves in the science seat of the Northwest Straits Commission and chairs the Science Advisory Committee. She is also a member of the Washington European Green Crab Research Task Force and the Oyster Drill Working Group.
